The first official public meeting of the Institute of Medicine Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education (IOM GME) on Sept. 4-5 focused on both residency-specific issues and broader topics, such as the relationship between broad workforce issues and the growing physician shortage. The IOM GME is charged with reviewing a number of GME-related topics, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, such as:

  • Residency slots
  • Specialists, subspecialists
  • Physician shortages
  • Current resident population
  • The Next Accreditation System
  • Financing options for GME

Representatives from several agencies/groups spoke at the meeting, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Departments of Veteran Affairs and Defense. A second public meeting of the IOM GME is scheduled for December 20-21.
