News and briefs: New physician shortage projection: 130,000 by 2025

The combination of a capped number of residency slots and expanded need for physicians fueled in part by the 2010 Affordable Care Act is creating a wider chasm in the physician shortage gap. The newest projection made by the Association of American Medical Colleges is a shortage of 130,000 by 2025, according to a Bloomberg article.

With budgets tighter every year, several legislators believe fundamental reform to the system is necessary. The best bets to close the gap is for those in GME to identify additional funding sources, as well as endorse currently proposed legislation that would increase the number of residencies by 15,000 over the next five years.
