News and briefs: Lack of policies leads to eye surgery disclosure debate

Only one quarter of program directors say their facility has a policy in place to disclose to eye surgery patients if a resident will be involved in the procedure, according to an online Chicago Tribune story. Yet the majority of respondents agreed that most patients like to know this information ahead of time and grant permission.   

Disclosure of residents in a surgical role could reduce the number of educational opportunities for them if patients object to it. About 50% of survey respondents say patients do not want residents involved in their surgery.
