Web-based residency management systems (RMS) come with a cost, but the programs can pay dividends when tracking duty hours.

Some RMS programs come with features that allow quick and easy schedule creation and compliance tracking that—in some cases—can be tailored to the needs of an individual residency program. As more digital options become available to track duty hours, consider RMS programs with the following options:

·         Personal digital assistant (PDA). A click of a single button as a resident walks through the hospital door will begin tracking hours and warn the resident if he or she is near ACGME duty-hour limits.

·         Web or intranet. Residents can sign in to a system to fill out a duty-hour log. This option gives a resident a chance to verify hours worked.

·         Surveys. With the right RMS, program coordinators can routinely distribute compliance surveys to residents.

·         Evaluations. Programs can add duty-hour questions to rotation evaluations for residents to complete.

This week’s tip is from The Residency Coordinator’s Handbook, Second Edition by Ruth Nawotniak, MS, C-TAGME.
