The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a new policy statement regarding professional liability insurance and medicolegal education for pediatric residents and fellows. The AAP wants pediatric residents and fellows to be fully aware of the scope of their professional liability insurance while in training, which is provided by the educational institution. Although the institution is ultimately held responsible for patient care, this does not clear residents and fellows from accountability. This is why it is important for these medical trainees to know such things as: the parameters of their liability coverage, statute of limitations, and the repercussions of being named in a lawsuit. This information is even more important to residents in the pediatrics track, because according to AAP, pediatricians face one of the highest average payments per claim in the United States.
