Researchers at the Mayo Clinic (MN) surveyed internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery program directors about the implications that the new duty hour rules would have on the ACGME core competencies, continuity of care, and resident fatigue.
The 464 respondents had the following to say about the effects of the new rules:
- 87% said the ACGME rules will decrease residents’ continuity with hospitalized patients
- 65% said that the rules will not change resident fatigue
- All indicated that residents’ competency in the six core competencies will decrease with surgery program directors reporting residents' progress is more likely to decrease than internal medicine directors
