Ask the expert: Which administrators should serve on the GMEC?

The ACGME Institutional Requirements state that voting membership of the GMEC must include administrators, but the standards do not specify who these administrators should be.

There are two key individuals you should consider including on the GMEC. First, invite important education directors from other hospitals in the system—such as your participating institutions—to serve as the administrators on your GMEC. For example, if your program uses a Veterans Administration (VA) hospital, the person in charge of residents at the VA should be on the committee. You can find a list of these institutions on your most recent institutional notification letter from the ACGME.

It is important that these individuals take an active role in the GMEC—they are the GME program’s connection with hospital administration. Their role is crucial in keeping information flowing between both entities. They can bring the GMEC’s concerns to the administration and vice versa.

In addition to the education directors, the GMEC should include the GME program administrator. Having this person seated on the committee is critical because he or she is responsible for taking the information gleaned from meetings back to the individual program coordinators.

GMEC actions eventually affect the residency programs so it is crucial that the program administrator keep program coordinators up to date on policy changes and new initiatives.
