Tip of the week: Invite speakers to coordinator meetings

Many institutions have monthly or quarterly meetings for coordinators to gather, learn, and network. Inviting a speaker from another department or even another institution to a coordinator meeting is a great way to educate attendees and promote the exchange of information between coordinators and other entities within the hospital. Having a speaker also allows coordinators to explain their point of view or challenges.

Consider inviting speakers to present on the following topics:

  • A Medicare/Medicaid expert to talk about the importance of particular documents and their effect on GME budgets
  • Residency management systems trainers to teach coordinators tips for navigating the software and answer any questions
  • A designated institutional official to address coordinators’ concerns and issues that they may not feel comfortable speaking with their directors about
  • A National Provider Identifier (NPI) administrator to explain NPIs and how to get residents an NPI number
  • A risk management expert to cover how HIPAA affects residents and how coordinators can keep residents in HIPAA compliance
  • An HR professional to give pointers on how to interview residents, including what questions are appropriate or inappropriate questions to ask applicants
  • The police department to talk about its challenges in processing residents and producing ID badges
  • A relocation expert from a real estate firm to help coordinators assist residents more when they move to the area
  • Member of the GME office to discuss internal review processes or ACGME site visit preparation
  • In-house ERAS expert to share tips on how to use the system during interview season
