Last week’s “Ask the expert” section covered the coordinator’s role in organizing and scheduling the resident inservice training examination. General surgery residency coordinator Katherine Newsum, from Florida Hospital in Orlando, pointed out that each specialty has different rules for administering RITEs. Here’s what she had to say:

“I just read the section on the RITEs in the latest edition of Residency Program Connection newsletter, and it was very informative and well written. My only thought is that maybe an addendum should be added that some specialties do not allow the exam to be given in two segments. The ABSITE is one of those, and the mandate is that the exam is to be given on the last Saturday of January, with the exception that if the institution has religious restrictions, a petition can go to the board requesting to give the exam on Sunday. Those are the only two options. They do not even allow the exam to be given on Friday.”

The coordinator’s first step in organizing the RITE should be to check in with the organization sponsoring the RITE to see what the rules are for scheduling the exam.
