In order to comply with work hour requirements and avoid resident fatigue, take the following actions:

• Know your program-specific requirements. These can vary widely, for example, emergency department requirements are more restrictive than surgical requirements.

• Know the ACGME’s duty hour requirements.

• Frequently refer to ACGME’s duty hour FAQs.

• Check whether there is an ACGME specialty-specific FAQ on fatigue or duty hours for your specialty.

Today's question and answer come from Insider's Guide to the ACGME Site Visit, Second Edition by Kathrn Andolsk, MD, MPH and Shepard Cohen.
