Bahrain joins global initiative for patient safety

Bahrain will now begin implementing the World Health Organization's Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiatives, according to Gulf Daily News. The initiatives will focus on the improvement, evaluation, and prevention of surgical site infections, safe anesthesia, safe surgical teams, and measurement and quality assurance mechanisms.

The Arab government was called on by health officials to take steps toward implementing the initiatives at private and public hospitals. There have also been suggestions for hospitals to implement a root cause analysis program when investigating adverse events, and to develop a system to prevent and reduce reoccurrences.

"We are not saying lives are in danger here, but that key errors could be prevented if simple steps are followed," said Fawzi Amin, MD, Health Ministry training and planning assistant under-secretary. "We have started implementing the initiatives and expect to see some results in the coming months and years,"
