CMS releases new videos for ICD-10 implementation

Physician Practice Insider, December 30, 2014

With the ICD-10 implementation date set for October 1, 2015, CMS has continued its efforts to provide education and information for organizations to prepare. Recently, CMS published its recording of the Transitioning to ICD-10 Provider Call and a new Coding for ICD-10-CM video to YouTube.

The provider call covers:

  • Final rule and national implementation
  • Medicare Fee-For-Service testing
  • Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Grouper (MS-DRG) Conversion Project
  • Partial code freeze and annual code updates
  • Plans for National Coverage Determinations (NCD) and Local Coverage Determinations (LCD)
  • Home health conversions
  • Claims that span the implementation date

On the call, CMS subject matter experts also discuss ICD-10 implementation issues, opportunities for testing, and resources for organizations.

In the Coding for ICD-10-CM video, Sue Bowman from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and Nelly Leon-Chisen from the American Hospital Association (AHA) review basic components of ICD-10-CM coding, such as:

  • How to assign a diagnosis code using ICD-10-CM
  • ICD-10-CM code structure
  • Coding process and examples for combination codes, seventh characters, placeholder X, Excludes notes, unspecified codes, and external cause codes

The pair also explain similarities and differences between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM and provide resources where coders can find additional information.
