New consortium aims to help small practices prepare for ICD-10

Physician Practice Insider, December 16, 2014

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, Humana, and other payers have formed a consortium to help small physician practices prepare for ICD-10-CM.

The group wants to meet with specialty practices, such as cardiologists and pulmonologists, to help them identify their top ICD-9-CM codes by volume and by dollar and map those codes to ICD-10-CM. After providers identify their top ICD-9-CM codes, they can perform ICD-10-CM testing with predefined scenarios to gauge the accuracy of the coding and potential reimbursement.

The consortium plans to launch a small medical specialty pilot for healthcare providers in Michigan before refining the program and rolling it out to multiple specialty organizations in other states.
