The World Health Organization and International Council of Nurses warn of a global shortfall of almost six million nurses in a newly released report.
Both organizations jointly produced the State of the World’s Nursing Report, which states that although there are nearly 28 million nurses worldwide, this number falls below the number needed. And when nurses are in short supply, infection and mortality rates are higher, as well as the chances of medical errors. Additionally, nurse shortages lead to high turnover rates and burnout among the nurse workforce.
The biggest gaps in the nursing workforce are in countries in Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean region, parts of Latin America, and South East Asia.
