To protect hospital employees’ and patients’ safety, the nurses at Oroville Hospital in California recently ratified a four-year contract with language that stipulates newprotection provisions.
According to the California Nurses Association, preventing workplace violence and protecting hospital employees and patients were the main drivers of the new language in the contract. In addition to expanded language addressing workplace violence and safe staffing for patient care, the contract also includes language on nurse meal and rest breaks and communicable disease protection.
Oroville Hospital has experienced high turnover in recent years. Three hundred of its 400 nurses have worked at the hospital for three years or less. A nurses association labor representative said patient care issues contributed to the high turnover rate.
