In a press release last week, the American Nurses Association (ANA) expressed their support for LGBTQ rights and their opposition to the president’s recent statements against transgender individuals.
The statement said that the ANA “believes that respect for the inherent dignity, worth, unique attributes, and human rights of all individuals is a fundamental principle.” This stance supports the ANA’s Code of Ethics, which establishes the ethical standards for all nurses to advocate for social justice and human rights, especially for groups whose rights are often violated.
The ANA opposes the recent actions by the administration regarding transgender individuals in the military and the Department of Justice’s stance that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not cover employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. They argue that these actions undermine the human rights, equality, and dignity of the LGBT community. The ANA stated that they “will fervently strive to protect and preserve the rights of vulnerable groups.”
