The Giving Excellence Meaning (GEM) Awards honored five of the best and brightest nurses in the U.S. The awards are presented every year by Nurse.com, with regional and national events held throughout the year.
The national winners were nominated by their peers and selected by a panel of nurse leaders for outstanding work in their respective fields.
Lauren Micale, BSN, RN, CPHON— A clinical nurse for the Bone Marrow Transplant/Hematology department at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Delaware, was given the award for Excellence in Clinical Nursing. A teacher, mentor, and experienced clinician, Micale is a bilingual nurse that advocates for her Spanish-speaking patients and their families.
Michele Rubin, MSN, APN, CNS-BC, CGRN— A clinical nurse specialist for the University of Chicago Medicine, Rubin specializes in inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal surgery. Rubin received the Excellence in Community Care award for her efforts in establishing the only nurse practitioner-operated J-Pouch clinic in Chicago.
J. Cedar Wang, MSN, RN, APN, GNP-BC, CHSE— The Director of Simulation Education for Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, N.J. was given the award for Excellence in Education and Mentorship. Wang left a career in academics to launch the hospital simulation center at Holy Name, which has earned statewide and national attention for its innovative approach to education.
Kimberly Pearson, MHA, MBA, RN, CCHP— Pearson is the Deputy Agency Director for Correctional Health Services at the Orange County Health Care Agency, and she was given the Excellence in Executive Leadership award. Nominated by her staff, Pearson oversees the healthcare of 7,000 incarcerated individuals; her staff describes her as a trustworthy and inspirational leader.
Tamre Del Vall, MSN, RN— The director of the Emergency Department and Cardiac Cath Lab at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California was awarded for Excellence in Management. Del Valle has guided her department through significant changes and improvements, while tirelessly encouraging her nurses to grow professionally and become patient advocates.
