On May 12, Nurses from around the country will be rallying in Washington, D.C. in support of two bills that would establish requirements for nurse-to-patient staffing ratios in acute care hospitals. The supporters of the bill say that regulating the staff ratios at hospitals will lead to better quality care and save lives. While there’s a lot of evidence that staff shortages have a negative effect on patient care, the financial and retention woes facing many hospitals (especially rural ones) make keeping an experienced staff together harder than ever.
