An upcoming study will help determine whether or not a tablet-based application can be used to detect abuse and identify victims of domestic violence, according to a news release from Advance for Nurses. Two nurse researchers initiated the study after noticing that women were less likely to discuss sensitive questions about partner violence, particularly when the partner was within hearing distance.

The study will assess 4,000 women, with half of them undergoing the standard screening in which a visiting nurse asks questions, and the other half using a tablet with on-screen questions. The study, funded by a $4 million grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, is specifically focused on at-risk pregnant women. Researchers predict that the use of tablets will identify one-third more women as victims of domestic violence.
