Inside the program: Examples of setting goals
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 15, 2010
A great example of how setting goals works is described in a paper by Baptist Health Care executives (Vermillion, Terry, Davis, & Owens, 2010). The executive team set goals for the hospital under each of the hospital’s five pillars: people, service, quality, financial performance, and growth. From there, the goals cascaded down throughout the organization to the unit or department level. Here are examples of the financial goals:
- Chief nursing officer (CNO): achieve operating margin* of 2%
- Service director: decrease RN agency use by 50% from the previous year
- Med-Surg manager: limit overtime to less than 2%
