Regulatory requirements related to practice, quality, and safety must be included in your orientation program as appropriate to the clinical situation. The following regulatory elements should be reviewed and incorporated into the charge nurse orientation progress report:

  • The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG)
  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
  • State Board of Nursing Regulations
  • Professional Standards of Care: American Nurses Association (ANA)
  • Code of Ethical Conduct: ANA
  • Patient rights and responsibilities
  • Facility policies and procedures: administrative and clinical
