In the news: Nurse appreciation gala canceled after nurses announce protest

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, September 20, 2010

UMass Memorial Medical Center hospital management have canceled their Nursing Appreciation Gala after unionized nurses announced they planned to boycott and potentially protest at the event, according to the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA).

Nurses from UMass Memorial, Hahnemann, Home Health and Hospice, and the UMass University Medical Center campuses of UMass Memorial Health Care threatened to boycott and protest out of concern for patient safety and concern that nurses are not respected, according to the MNA.

A recent decision to close a medical/surgical floor, which would cut 27 nursing positions, and 28 patient beds spurred on the support for protest.

“The nurses have had it with the complete disrespect for nurses and patients shown by this administration and as demonstrated by the changes taking place,” Kathie Logan, RN, chair of the MNA local bargaining unit on the UMass University campus, said in press statement.
