Inside the program: Introduction to process

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 13, 2010

A process is a sequence of interrelated activities that convert inputs from suppliers into outputs for customers. A process could be, for example, obtaining a diagnostic test for a patient—composed of a series of separate processes, such as:

  • Ordering the test
  • Obtaining the specimen
  • Labeling the specimen
  • Transporting the specimen
  • Receiving the specimen
  • Selecting the equipment, reagent, or other tools to conduct the test
  • Conducting the test
  • Recording the results
  • Communicating the results
