The new ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) model unveiled in 2008 requires MRP hospitals and those aspiring to become MRP designated to showcase exceptional outcomes. Exceptional outcomes defined by the MRP include outperforming the mean in multiple nursing-sensitive indicators (NSI) based on a national benchmark. These include a wide array of indicators. In addition, for those units in which such indicators do not apply, the applying hospital must choose other specialty-specific, nationally benchmarked indicators. This MRP requirement has led to an explosion of unit-/population-specific indicators. MRP listservs and networking platforms have produced a number of indicators. The list continues to grow as more hospitals become interested in population-specific NSIs.
