In the know: Understanding stress’s impact on patient learning

Proper communication and education with patients is a critical step to ensuring good patient behavior; however, it is important to recall that patients under stress are not the best candidates for understanding what's going on around them.

That is why it's always best for nurses to determine a person's stress level, level of ability to concentrate on what is being said, interest in the subject, and attention to the conversation before attempting to give him or her any type of instruction.
