There are advantages and disadvantages to the unit where you first choose to work. Traditional wisdom holds that new grads need one year of medical surgical experience before going to a specialty unit; however, new nurses now have a much easier time obtaining residency in the area of nursing they want. So what should you consider?

Think of the following potential benefits and drawbacks of the medical-surgical unit:

Benefits:

  • Best way for overall experience
  • Exposure to a variety of cases

 

Drawbacks:

  • Higher patient-nurse ratios
  • No specialization
