Ask the expert: No-cost ways to drum up staff enthusiasm
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 29, 2009
This week, a reader asks about ways to get staff members excited about applying for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation without spending any money. Read the response from Carolyn K. Lewis, PhD, RN, CNAA,BC, assistant dean for the nursing division of the Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, KY.
Q: Can you suggest some ways we can get staff excited about applying for MRP designation without spending any money?
A: Organizing a facilitywide contest is a great way to get people talking about designation and excited about applying, and it needn't cost a thing. Consider a poster, photograph, or essay content about a topic linked to MRP designation. For example, challenge nurses or all employees to create posters, take photographs, or write essays that demonstrate the organization's mission or values.
Organize a "blue ribbon" panel of senior leadership or members from shared governance councils to judge the entries. Select the top 10 examples and display them in the main lobby of the facility with blue ribbons next to each. Have the CNO, CEO, or chairman of the board sign award letters that cite the unique characteristics of each blue ribbon winner's submission.
