HCTW news brief: Hospitals receive bonuses for improving quality performance

Staff Development Weekly: Insight on Evidence-Based Practice in Education, August 21, 2009

Twelve million dollars in bonus money is being shared among 230 hospitals who participated in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Premier healthcare alliance Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration (HQID) value-based purchasing project after the hospitals saw an improvement in quality.

During the fourth year of the project, the hospitals saw an average of 17.2% improvement in 30 selected quality measures, such as evidence-based clinical quality measures including smoking cessation, discharge instructions, and pneumococcal vaccination. Mortality rates suggest that as many as 4,700 heart attack patients may have been saved during the four years of the study.
