News brief: Best hospital list factors in nursing excellence

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 21, 2009

After last week's list of the nation's best children's hospitals, this week US News & World Report released its annual ranking of the country's elite medical centers. Once again, nursing excellence and an organization's designation as an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) facility are factored into the scoring.

Twenty-one hospitals are called out for this year's "honor roll," which US News & World Report categorizes as the best of the best. These 21 hospitals represent 0.4% of the 4,861 hospitals considered for the overall list. Fifteen of the 21 are MRP facilities.

Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, with 1, 041 licensed beds, tops the list for the nineteenth year in a row.
