In the news: ANA makes statement against nurse portrayal in TV’s "HawthoRNe"

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, June 29, 2009

The American Nurses Association (ANA) has released a statement protesting what it calls the negative portrayal of nursing in TNT's new nurse drama HawthoRNe. The ANA argues that though the program attempts to show nursing in a positive light with a strong nurse lead, the show also includes a plot line in which a nurse and patient are intimately involved, promoting a stereotype while insulting the professionalism of nurses.

The ANA says it welcomes the opportunity to work with the entertainment industry on producing more realistic and positive portrayals of nurses, and urged its members to contact TNT to complain.

The association also alluded to the nursing shortage, suggesting that now is not the time for an unflattering depiction of nurses.
