News brief: Illinois hospital launches helpful online heart quiz
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 16, 2009
Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2005—has found an effective new patient education technique: an online health quiz.
The hospital launched HeartAware in January, a free online survey that takes about five minutes to complete and asks a series of questions to rate individuals' heart health status and risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. People who receive "at risk" assessments receive a follow-up call from a nurse in a day or two who offers tips and recommendations about how to improve heart health.
The risk evaluation is based on long-term research conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The hospital notes that heart disease is the number one killer in this country and that close to 900,000 Americans die from the disease each year.
