Inside scoop from our experts: Deliver safe patient care with quality improvement projects

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 13, 2009

This week, a reader asks for examples of quality improvement projects. Read the response below from our advisor Barbara Hannon, RN, MSN, CPHQ, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program coordinator for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.

Q: What are examples of topics for quality improvement projects?

A: The only way to assure that care being delivered to patients is safe is to constantly improve processes through quality improvement projects. Also, the ANCC expects clear evidence of quality improvement initiatives specifically done by direct-care nurses.

The following are a few examples of topics for quality improvement projects that direct-care nurses can conduct:

  • Falls prevention
  • Pain management
  • Vacancy rate and nursing satisfaction
  • Patient satisfaction
