Inside best practice: Get buy-in from nonnursing staff
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 6, 2009
To get ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® buy-in, you must tie the group you are speaking to into the overall goal by letting them see how designation will help them.
For example, I made a PowerPoint presentation on nurse-physician collegiality that was built around the acute nursing shortage, which certainly affects physicians at the hospital. I emphasized how important it was to retain each and every nurse at the hospital and how physicians could help create a more collegial environment. This, in turn, can ensure that nurses don’t leave because of physician issues.
This PowerPoint was taken to every clinical faculty group at the hospital and was well-received, with most faculty groups expressing a desire to make the environment more nurse-physician friendly. Include everyone; do not make this only a nursing initiative. After all, nursing does not practice in a vacuum.
