Inside best practice: Recognize and reward
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 23, 2008
Staff at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, OH—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2008—are in to recognizing one another for a job well done. A few of the recognizing and rewarding initiatives include:
- Theme celebrations: SOMC staff members are into theme celebrations. For example, Zero® candy bars are handed out when a unit has zero falls, and Progresso soup was recently handed out to the nursing leadership group for making progress.
- Thank you notes: SOMC holds a formal class for leaders on how to write thank you notes. “You think it’s a simple thing to do, but sometimes staff members don’t know how to write a note that’s meaningful,” says Valerie DeCamp, RN, MHA, NEA-BC, director of nursing inpatient services and accreditation. “We mail the thank you cards to employees’ homes so their family sees what kind of sacrifice their loved one makes.”
