Inside the Forces: Decentralize the nursing department
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 16, 2008
Under Force of Magnetism 2: Organizational structure, which falls under Component II: Structural empowerment, it is important that the nursing department be decentralized. This allows the CNO and all levels of nursing in the organization to make decisions that ensure national nursing standards and professional nursing practice are incorporated into the operational and clinical aspects of the organization.
For example, staff nurses who provide direct patient care, offer important insight into problem-solving on the organization’s safety committee. Their contributions enhance problem-solving activities that concern patient identification, the safety of medication administration, concerns regarding the use of infusion pumps, and care across the continuum.
