Inside the Forces: Build relationships between nurses and students
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 25, 2008
The Adopt-a-Student program at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN, meets expectations for Force of Magnetism 11: Nurses as teachers, which falls under Component III: Exemplary professional practice. The program gives staff nurses an opportunity to mentor local nursing students. Staff who accept this opportunity are held accountable for meeting the students needs, whether that’s educating them on quality patient care and clinical skills or helping with resume building and job interviewing techniques.
Lutheran—a 2005 ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient—promoted the program by having staff nurses attend lunch-n-learns with the hospital’s recruiter at area nursing schools. Nursing students and Lutheran nurses interested in the mentorship program call in to a confidential telephone line at the hospital—created specifically for this program—that has an automated voice message that requests contact information, area of nursing interest for the student, and area of nursing practice for the nurse. This information is used to create a match between mentor and student.
Correspondence between the student and his or her mentor takes place over the phone, through e-mail, and over lunch.
