According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year healthcare-associated infections (HAI) affect nearly 1.7 million hospital patients, or about one in every 20 patients, and are a top 10 leading cause of death in the United States (more than 99,000 deaths per year). In addition, they’ve led to an estimated $28–$33 billion in added costs to healthcare budgets that are already stretched thin.
