A. The first requirement is that the beneficiary must have been an inpatient in an acute care hospital for a minimum of three consecutive calendar days. The day of admission, not the day of discharge, is counted as a hospital inpatient day. Time spent in observation or in the emergency room does not count toward this qualifying stay; the beneficiary must be admitted as an inpatient.
