“When you hear stories about the number of nursing home residents that were restrained years ago and how they were restrained, it is shocking. But that is what facilities knew to do to keep the residents safe, so they did it with the best intentions,” says Michelle Pandolfi, MSW, LNHA, education advisor at the Connecticut Association of Not-for-Profit Providers for the Aging in Berlin. “Now that people in the industry are starting to learn more and understand the physical and psychological effects of restraints, people are starting to move away from them.”
