IRS ruling allows hospitals to help doctors with EHR adoption

Physician Practice Advisor, May 16, 2007

An IRS memo has made it clear that not-for-profit hospitals can help subsidize the cost of providing electronic health record systems and other information technology services to affiliated physicians without losing their tax-exempt status, Government Health IT reports.

The May 11 memo cited a Department of Health and Human Services ruling in August 2006 that granted exemptions from federal anti-kickback and Stark self-referral laws to hospitals donating IT to physicians.
