Survey: HIPAA compliance remains low

Physician Practice Advisor, October 18, 2006

HIPAA compliance is still low, and has stalled in many areas since last winter, according to a semi-annual survey conducted by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and Phoenix Health Systems.

The survey was conducted in the summer of 2006 and measured the following areas of HIPAA compliance:

  • HIPAA security. Only 56% of providers have implemented security standards, and 39% have experienced security incidents in the past six months. Eighty percent of payers reported implenting security standards, up from 72% in January 2006.
  • HIPAA transactions and national provider identifier (NPI). Providers reporting full compliance with the transactions and code set standards dropped from 84% in January to 72%. Almost 67% of participating providers have already applied for their NPI.
  • HIPAA privacy.Twenty-two percent of providers were not compliant with privacy regulations. However, the number of providers who experienced privacy breaches decreased from 60% to 52% in the six-month period.
