ACDIS Celebrates Third Anniversary, Membership Tops 2,000

Press Releases, October 1, 2010

The Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS) celebrates its third anniversary this October. Director Brian Murphy is thrilled with not only the association's growth in membership, but by its successes in highlighting the importance of the new and growing clinical documentation improvement (CDI) profession.

"CDI was a relatively new profession three years ago and just coming into its own," Murphy says. "People in the industry didn't have any kind of dedicated resources, networking opportunities, or a place to call their own."

ACDIS has elevated the standing and awareness of the profession by turning a spotlight on the work done by CDI specialists in performing concurrent record reviews, initiating physician queries, conducting physician and clinical staff education, tracking performance data, and working with case management and HIM/coding staff.

Murphy is most proud of the Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) certification developed and sponsored by the ACDIS board and industry leaders. He expects the number of CDI specialists who have earned the CCDS credential to hit 500 by year-end.

"ACDIS and the CCDS credential have given hospitals a base-line competency against which to measure their CDI staff and programs," Murphy says. "We're beginning to see the CCDS credential cited in job listings. That's a strong indication that ACDIS has made an impression on the industry and says clearly that the work CDI specialists do is recognized as a unique competency that is highly valued by hospital administration."

The strong demand for CDI networking opportunities has prompted local interest as well, evidenced by the formation of 40 local ACDIS chapters.

In June, ACDIS played host to 500 CDI specialists and 24 vendors at its third annual conference in Chicago. The 2011 conference will be held April 7-8 in Orlando and will feature an added emphasis on preparation for ICD-10
