Physicians thrive on data. They analyze and digest it. As with most individuals, they seek their personal best. However, data must be credible and unbiased. A profile that reflects data elements should include the following:

  1. Physician's name.
  2. Specialty.
  3. Average monthly discharges.
  4. Current delinquencies (based on either a daily or weekly report).
  5. Delinquency percentage as a percent of average monthly discharges (delinquencies divided by average monthly discharges for that physician).
  6. Delinquency rate for the physician compared to those for all physicians in the same specialty who had discharges.
  7. Comparison with others who have similar average discharges. This may be more difficult to calculate, depending on the size of the medical staff. You'll need to examine all the physicians on staff who have comparable monthly discharges and use a spreadsheet application to sort data. The comparable monthly discharges should be a range of no more than +/-10%.
