Trying to document HIM workflow is like trying to capture your morning routine on paper. Much of it is probably so ingrained in your mind that you feel overwhelmed trying to vocalize the process. But despite its daunting nature, analyzing workflow can actually help you implement a more effective EHR. It's a step that many hospitals miss, says Lynn Kuehn, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA, consultant with Kuehn Consulting in Waukesha, WI. "Without a workflow analysis, important steps can be forgotten. It's surprising how many steps we do that we don't think about," she says.
Analyzing workflow prior to beginning the project is what helped Weill Cornell Hospital in New York City effectively establish a document imaging system in 1997, ultimately reducing its staff and reorganizing its entire department.
