Although HIM director salaries haven't risen significantly during the past year, the number of professionals pursuing higher education has, according to the 2007 MRB HIM director salary survey. Forty-six percent of survey respondents reported that they have a bachelor's degree, up from 42% in 2006. Twenty-one percent of survey respondents reported that they have a master's degree, up from 19% in 2006.

"Employers are raising the bar," says Rose T. Dunn, RHIA, CPA, FACHE, chief operating officer of First Class Solutions in St. Louis. "They'll accept a bachelor's degree, but they prefer a master's degree."

This has left HIM directors with little option other than to pursue higher education if they want to remain a viable candidate. "You want to make sure that you have the education, experience, and the degrees to be able to back yourself up," says Ellen MacMullin, RHIA, director of HIM for Winchester (MA) Hospital.

Credentials and higher education are just two of the many factors that affect salary. We'll explore several other striking statistics from our annual reader survey.
