Look for ways to enhance the work experience for both surgeons and staff at your facility. Even the following small gestures can go a long way:

  • Provide a simple breakfast--toast, milk, cereal, fresh fruit, and yogurt.
  • Cater lunch on occasion.
  • Ask each team member whom they appreciate most that month and why. Incorporate the question at every staff meeting.
  • Reward surgeons for great dictation with a gift certificate for a nice dinner out.
  • Take the time to listen to the staff and physicians.
  • Be prepared so you can allow staff to take days off at the spur of the moment.
  • Sandy Berreth, RN, BS, MM, CASC, administrator, Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center, Baxter, MN, provoded this tip. For more information, click here.
