Long-term acute care hospitals (LTCH) have been commonly misunderstood, as the term “long-term” historically applied to long-term nursing facilities. By contrast, LTCHs are licensed as “short-term” acute-care hospitals.

To clear up this confusion, and offer some interesting ideas about how CDI programs might benefit LTCH, ACDIS Advisory Board member Wendy De Vreugd, RN, BSN, PHN, FNP, CCDS, MBA, created a new, six-page, comprehensive white paper, explaining how LTCHs differ from their short-term acute care siblings, with an emphasis on important differences in coding, reimbursement, and quality reporting measures.

For example, because an LTCH patient may have 20 or more comorbid conditions, and a longer length of stay, a CDI specialist must be diligent and persistent in assessing all ongoing physician documentation of diagnoses, examining potential clinical correlations, and clarifying specificity in a larger medical record (which may include both electronic and paper records).
