The answer is A. The U.S. purchased Alaska for $7.2 million in 1867, equivalent to approximately $121 million today, from the Russian Empire. It did not become a state until 1959. The most expensive was the Philippines at $20 million in 1898, the equivalent of nearly $570 million today.
