Tip: Modifier ?PO remains voluntary until 2016

As part of the April quarterly OPPS update, CMS revised the Medicare Claims Processing Manual to include instructions on the use of modifier -PO (services, procedures, and/or surgeries furnished at off-campus, provider-based outpatient departments).
The manual reiterates that coders should append this modifier on every HCPCS code for outpatient hospital services performed in an off-campus, provider-based department, though reporting the modifier is voluntary until January 1, 2016.
