Each year, the AMA updates the Vaccines, Toxoids section of the Medicine chapter in the CPT® Manual to add or revise descriptions of newly available products. In 2015, the AMA added two new product codes (90651, 90630) and revised four (90654, 90721, 90723, and 90734).
If a specific vaccine code is not available, the unlisted procedure code (90749) should be reported until a new code is available, according to the revised guidelines. Codes in this section reflect the most recent vaccine abbreviations used by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) at the time of publication, but interim updates are available between publication dates at the AMA CPT website following ACIP approval.
This tip is adapted from “Medicine section updates reflect new products and technologies to report" in the April issue of Briefings on APCs.
